Serguei Maksimishin: The Last Empire

The CAIXA Cultural of São Paulo opens on May 29 the exhibition "The Last Empire" by Russian photographer Serguei Maksimishin. Considered one of the greatest names of its generation worldwide, the photographer presents his work for the first time in Brazil, curated by Luiz Gustavo Carvalho. The artist and curator of the exhibition will be present at the opening of the event and will conduct a guided tour with the public. The project is an achievement of Ars et Vita and is sponsored by Caixa Econômica Federal and the Federal Government.

Serguei Maksimishin's work portrays the life of contemporary Russia, allowing the public to know the daily life of this country through a sensitive and objective witness. The 65 photographs that make up the exhibition "The Last Empire" present the sensitive and complex work of a photographer who portrays his country through a sharp, courageous and audacious look. "Serguei Maksimishin portrays various facets and aspects of life in post-Soviet Russia, showing the crisis the country faced in the 90 years and the current problems. In this way, 'The last empire' is an objective, sensitive testimony, endowed with an extremely intelligent mood and devoid of any ideological aesthetics, "explains Luiz Gustavo Carvalho.

Artistically, Maksimishin's work reflects a virtuosity in relation to luminosity, framing, as well as the construction of images, showing the complexity of the artistic universe of a photographer who is not content to understand his society superficially. Serguei Maksimishin allows the viewer an immersion in the complex and deep universe of a country of continental proportions. Serguei Maksimishin's Russia is portrayed by everyday scenes, which span all the country's meridians, from Kaliningrad to Kamchatka. "The Russian photographer portrays the antagonisms of this country and the strength of the old Soviet system, whose wrecks are still present in people's daily lives," continues the curator.

During the guided tour, aspects of the Russian school of photography and the panorama of contemporary Russian photography, as well as the work and activities of the artist, will be discussed. In this way, the interested public can draw parallels and identify similarities and differences between the photographic scene in Russia and Brazil.
